Imagine this: you’re a business owner who spends years honing a trade, perfecting a signature dish, or building a stellar reputation. You meet one of our flock members at an event, at a bar, or a coffee shop. We chat, we vibe, and then we take a look at your marketing to learn more.

But then… 🤮

So many times, we have a great conversation only to see that some or all parts of your digital footprint sounds like it was written by a zombie. We know Halloween’s just around the corner, but it’s definitely not a treat for us to look at. We can tell when you’re using AI.

AI makes a ton of cool things possible – we’ve used it to analyze colors, tweak recipes, and make goofy images, just to name a few. However, as a business owner, when you set AI on autopilot, it can very easily strip away the exact thing that makes your business special: you.

What “Unedited AI” Looks Like in the Wild

You’ve probably bumped into this as a customer without even realizing it.

  • The Robotic Review Reply: A customer posts a heartfelt, four-paragraph review about how a specific technician saved their weekend. The CRM auto-generates a response: “Thank you for your review about our technician saving your weekend! We are glad our technician provided good service.” When it echoes the exact phrasing back to the user, it comes off as emotionless, lazy, and tells the customer you didn’t care enough to actually read what they wrote.  The Result: the customer wonders why they wasted time writing a review, and looks for a different company next time they need service.
  • The Fabricated Food: A local restaurant owner asks ChatGPT to create his lunch menu. Suddenly, the operating hours are listed as “Monday through Thursday, 11:00 Hours – 22:00 Hours,” the dish descriptions sound like they came from an obscure European cookbook, and the imagery shows a stacked burger that looks nothing like the cozy, authentic neighborhood joint people love to hang out at. The Result: customers come in expecting what was shown on his social media, and are disappointed when the dish they order looks nothing like it.  They choose a different restaurant, or they stay home and cook.
  • The 4:00 AM Automation Uh-Oh: A service-based business plugs an automated CRM workflow into their lead pipeline. An online inquiry comes through overnight, and at 4:12 AM, the system fires off an automated text: “Thanks for reaching out! We’re calling you right now to confirm your appointment details.” Instead of looking responsive, it startles the customer in the middle of the night and reveals that no human is actually managing the wheel – or worse, not caring that they may be disturbing their customer’s sleep. The Result: Once the lead has their coffee and catches a few more winks, they look for a company who responds at a normal time – or worse, they choose to not invest at all.
  • The Expensive Service That Uses Cheap Tools: A home improvement contractor scrapped their own marketing investment and now uses only AI graphics (labeled as such) for promotional purposes. The Result: Prospective customers ask “What other areas of your operations are you cutting corners in if you’re not investing in your marketing? Are you letting AI auto-generate your client invoices, project estimates, or change orders without checking the line items?

When convenience completely replaces care, accuracy disappears. The moment a client spots a glaring mistake or senses detachment, trust evaporates. In the age of super technology, people still like to buy from people – not robots. That’s especially true for small businesses.

The Hidden Cost: Google’s Search Penalties

It isn’t just your human audience that notices when you cut corners—search engines do, too.

Google’s explicit Search Quality Rater Guidelines and Helpful Content System treat scaled, unedited AI content as low-quality filler. Google penalizes content created primarily for search engines rather than human readers, categorizing unvetted, mass-produced AI text under Scaled Content Abuse.

Under Google’s latest updates:

  • Effort & Added Value Matter: Pages where the main content is auto-generated with little to no human editing, unique perspective, or hands-on refinement receive the lowest quality rating from evaluators.
  • E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness): Google rewards real human experience. An AI can rehash facts, but it cannot share first-hand job site insights or compensate for authentic customer relationships.

If your digital marketing strategy involves firing off unedited AI copy and images without using a human touch, you run a very real risk of tanking your search visibility.

Confession: We Also Use AI

In fact, AI helped us outline and structure parts of this very blog post. So why doesn’t this blog post sound like a soulless robot?

Because a human being (hi!) guided the tool, injected real-world examples, refined the voice, and gave it a second set of trained eyes. We use AI as an assistant, not a replacement for creativity, storytelling, or empathy.

Here’s the truth about marketing and AI: You’re going to spend money, you’re going to spend time, or you’re going to be generic.

If you don’t invest the time to train your tools and edit the output, or invest the money to hire someone to do it for you, your default is straight to generic.

And generic doesn’t build memorable brands—it buries them. If your marketing looks and sounds like everyone else, you’re losing customers before they even walk through your door.

Use AI to brainstorm. Use it to draft. Use it to speed up your process. But never let it have the final say on how the world sees your business.
